UMB Rocks Socks for a Cause

Mike Hagedorn in genKC SocksWhen I joined the genKC board of directors and learned about its Socks for a Cause initiative, I instantly knew it would be a hit with UMB associates. After all, it combined two of our favorite things — supporting the community and showing KC pride.
My thoughts immediately began spinning with ideas for how to get associates involved. I started with Mike Hagedorn, vice chair of UMB Financial Corporation and president/CEO of UMB Bank. Not only is he one of our top leaders, he is also vice chair of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. When I told him about the program, he was eager to lend his support.
In Kansas City locations, nearly 30 percent of associates are millennials. These associates are extremely active and engaged with the community and when I brought genKC’s socks to their attention, many jumped at the chance to support Faxon Elementary.
Associates set up a table in busy areas of two of our downtown buildings and sold socks during their lunch breaks. My initial hope was that we’d sell 50 pair; instead, all of the socks were sold by day two. In the end, more than 80 UMB friends and family purchased genKC socks.
Our associates regularly participate in genKC’s professional development, networking and signature events. Selling these custom-designed socks was just one more way UMB was able to support genKC, and its early education program.
Driven by a mission to inspire young professionals to live, work and thrive in the Kansas City Region, genKC believes it is critical to grow our region’s future leaders by supporting childhood education. At least $3 from each sale of genKC’s Socks for a Cause is directed toward making Faxon Elementary a more resilient school.
